8/10/2013 – Whitehorse to Skagway

Writer: sridgway38sridgway38

We left Whitehorse Yukon Territory, Canada this morning bound for Skagway Alaska. The first part of our journey was by motor coach. We stopped several times along the way for pictures. First we saw some baby eagles in a nest just outside of Whitehorse.

Next we stopped at a lake called Emerald Lake. The sun wasn’t shining on it yet so it wasn’t as green as it can be but it was still beautiful.

On the way to Fraser BC we stopped at a place called Carcross. It has the smallest desert in the world. About 1 square mile.

The town of Carcross itself was really cute and had some very interesting shops.

There was also a river here.

The scenery along the way was beautiful.

Eventually we reached Fraser and boarded the White Pass train. The White Pass is a small gauge train that winds down through the mountains until it reaches Skagway Alaska at the bottom. Here are a bunch of pictures.

We crossed the border from Canada to Alaska again.

This is an old train bridge which is no longer in use

This shows you the train and the tracks alongside the mountain. It is a good perspective of how close to the edge you travel.

There was lots of Fireweed along the way. That is the pink flower that we see everywhere. There are a lot of Forrest fires here and fireweed is the first thing to come back after a fire.

Here is the train bridge that we crossed, looking back up the mountain from further down.

Finally we reached Skagway and transferred over to the ship to get settled. Here is our ship.

We walked briefly around in Skagway and then settled into the cabin. Here are some pictures from Skagway.

Here is a picture of the train that we took.

Our Verandah stateroom.

We had a 5:45 dinner seating so we got dressed for dinner. Here is Cody looking dapper.

When we got back to the stateroom we had a seal made from a towel on our beds. Krish, our cabin steward made it. We met him a few minutes later.

We headed outside for a lifeboat drill and then settled into the staterooms to watch as the ship pulled out.

Tomorrow is Glacier bay.
