8/11/2013 – Glacier Bay

Writer: sridgway38sridgway38

We woke up early as the sun was coming up because the Captain had told us that the best Whale watching opportunity was going to be at 6 AM. Since the sun comes up very early, you don’t need to set an alarm to get up early, you just leave the curtains open. We saw a beautiful sunrise off of the Verandah.

We found our way to the bow of the ship where we could have a wide view of both sides of the ship. There was a graduate student from University of Montana who was doing research on Hump Back Whales so she was able to tell us where we were most likely to see them.

Here is a view of the bridge of the ship from where we were on the Bow.

We did in fact see several hump back whales at the mouth of glacier bay.

We travelled into Glacier bay and the scenery was beautiful. We saw lots of Glaciers, among them the Marjorie and Johns Hopkins glaciers. The water in Glacier bay was as smooth as glass making for some nice reflections in the water.

Here we are on our verandah in front of Marjorie Glacier

We definitely enjoyed the Verandah that was part of our rooms. They opened the divider on the verandah between the rooms and we could go back and forth. It added a lot of extra room and gave us a place to view the scenery and wildlife right from our rooms. It was well worth the extra cost.

We sat on the chairs and watched a lot of Sea Otters float by. They seemed completely un-phased by the massive ship passing just past them.

A park ranger came aboard our ship in Glacier bay by way of a small boat that joined us for a few minutes and then came back at the end of the day to pick him up.

Right after we left Glacier bay we went to 3:00 tea. There is a tea every day but today is cupcake tea so we decided to go. The downstairs dining room was already set up for formal night which was tonight.

The cupcakes and tea sandwiches were very good.

We went back to the room and took a short nap. Seems that we do a lot of eating, but here we are after our nap headed for formal night in the dining room. We decided that the boys really outshines us tonight.

Mom and I had surf and turf for dinner, Cody had chicken, and Mom’s “turf”, Conrad had a New York Strip steak. After dinner we went back to the verandah and a large pod of Hump Back whales passed by very close to the ship.

Krish our cabin steward came by and left some surprises for us on our beds.

Off to bed. Ketchican in the morning.
