Churchill Day 4 - 10/31/2024

Writer: sridgway38sridgway38

Today is our last day on the Tundra in Churchill. We woke early as usual and got breakfast at the hotel. We met Garrett and Bob outside for a ride to the rover home. Garrett had his halloween costume on - he was a giant hot dog. Lorne was our Driver again and he had a pumpkin in the Rover that had been carved by the local high school kids. We headed out on the Tundra and saw a number of bears, including some very close to the rovers, but it was really hard to beat yesterday. The mood was relaxed and most people spent time taking photos of landscapes or looking for Arctic Hare and foxes, we say neither.

We had another delicious lunch and mostly sat in one area for a good part of the day. We headed back by the Tundra Lodge that the Nat Hab company owns and where you can stay out on the Tundra overnight. We chose not to stay there, and were glad that we stayed in town. The town of Churchill is really interesting and we really enjoyed staying there.

After our day on the Tundra, we had a bit of time before the evening activities so we went across the street to The Northern general store to get some candy for trick of treaters. Then some people stayed at the hotel and some of us went to the art gallery to hear Garrett talk about editing photos. It was a good discussion. We then headed back to the hotel to pick up the rest of the group. Halloween in Churchill is a little different because of the Polar bears and so after volunteer law enforcement officials from around Manitoba help to sweep the town for Polar Bears, the kids are allowed to go out to trick or treat. We all piled into the van with Bob at the wheel and drive around and kids would board the van to get candy from us. There were lots of jokes about luring small children into a van for candy but the Nat Hab van seemed to be recognized by the kids and they and their parents had no hesitation allowing the kids to get candy from us. It was really fun. We then headed to another local restaurant for dinner. This was a newer restaurant and the good was very good. We had a good time and headed back to the hotel for the night. We get to sleep in a bit tomorrow since we're leaving Churchill tomorrow and not going out on the Tundra.
