Marseille – Wednesday May 31

Writer: sridgway38sridgway38

We arrived in Marseille and had scheduled a bike ride through Marseille on eliectric aided bikes. They didn’t do all the work, otherwise they would be called motorcycles but there were several aided settings that made it possible for everyone in the group to travel to the city and even up a very steep hill to the church above the city.

We took a bus into the center of the city and met our guide. When we first got on the bus there was confusion and not enough stickers for everyone, they were expecting 20 and there were 25 of us. the didn’t have enough bikes at the shop for everyone so 5 people were taken off the bus for a later trip, we were glad that we got to stay on the first trip because it was calling for rain later.  We were fitted with bikes and helmets and off we went. We rode by the harbor and a museum that was right on the water.

In the town of Marseille – way off in the distance you can see the church that we would eventually ride up to at the highest point in the city

We stopped at several other locations for different photos, and travelled along the city streets which at times were crowded and without bike lanes but the guide explained that there are more and more bike lanes in the city now.

We also stopped at a bakery where we had some coffee and the best pastries of the trip. We sat outside to eat and then headed off to climb the very steep climb to the church.

We had a few in the group who had trouble even with the electric aid of the bike but everyone eventually made it to the top for some stunning views.

Going down from the church was almost as hard for some as the climb up, it was steep and windy and on very narrow streets shared with cars. Luckily for us the rain held off until the very end and we only had 2 people who fell, one at the very last street by the shop. The group that had been taken off of our bus in the morning arrived to take their tour as ours ended and it was raining and we were glad that we didn’t have to ride in the rain.

By now Shawn’s cold was feeling worse so we went to dinner and then she went right to bed.

We had a surprise in the room when we got back.
