Today we decided to take a short 3 mile hike to Hidden Lake Overlook, recommended by Mo our Glacier Guides guide. We had to drive about 2/3rds of the way down going to the sun road to reach the Logan Pass parking area for this trail. That area gets crowded early so we headed out pretty early to make sure that we got a spot. We arrived at 8 AM and found that there were still some spots available. The parking is limited to 3 hours. They have a system where you enter your license plate, get a voucher to put on your dashboard, and the expiration time is printed on the paper. A woman with a clip board was patrolling the parking area making sure that cars were abiding by the time limit. This parking area is used for several trail heads including the highline trail so it’s always crowded.
Almost immediately after starting the trail, we encountered some big horm sheep just hanging out by the trail.
The path at Hidden Lake was fairly easy, partially boardwalk and partially compacted gravel. There was a gradual elevation gain all the way up but relatively easy.
After hidden lake we decided to drive the rest of Goint To The Sun Road to St Mary’s and stop to take any nice views along the way
After we reached the East Glacier Entrance at St. Marys we had some lunch at a little roadside cafe. They had great milkshakes and burgers. A bus had a lunch stop nearby and after someone from the bus came in to get a milkshake, and got back on the bus, more and more people from the bus kept tricking in to get them. They sold quite a few while we were sitting there.
We then took Going to the Sub road all the way back to the Glacier Guides lodge for our final night there. We had Pizza, from Last, Best Pizza, also a recommendation from Mo, and it was spot on. Super cheesy and great crust.
Tomorrow we head over to Many Glacier for the rest of our trip.
